When most people think of roofs, the first thing that comes to mind is the shingles or other visible components. But beneath all of these external components is the underlayment, which is critical to your roofing system’s longevity.
Read on to learn more about underlayment and why it shouldn’t be overlooked.
Why Is Underlayment Important?
This part of the roof is intended to be installed beneath all roofing materials as an additional layer of protection against water and other elements. When your shingles are blown off during a storm, the underlayment will hold the fort and protect your home from water infiltration. Underlayment also acts as a buffer until roof repairs are completed or the shingles are replaced.
Types of Underlayment
- Asphalt-Saturated – Asphalt-saturated felt was the standard underlayment until about 15 years ago, when synthetic materials became more common. Nevertheless, it is still a dependable material due to its flexibility and water-resistance. It is also widely available, making it the least expensive type of underlayment.
- Nonbitumen Synthetic – This is the most common type of underlayment. It’s essentially an upgrade from asphalt-saturated underlayment because it has better water-resistance. It’s also intended for full coverage of the entire roof, making it a cost-effective option for homeowners.
- Rubberized Asphalt – Rubberized asphalt is a premium underlayment material that offers all the benefits of the other two types of underlayment. It is completely waterproof due to its higher percentage of asphalt and rubber polymer. It is designed with a sticky back and a protective membrane between the support and the roof deck. It’s the most expensive type of underlayment.
